i'm the idiot who agreed to take the beer promoter job, and somehow got myself such a tiring job...
maybe it's bad luck, or i was destined to have sth challenging. was initially posted to the thomson branch, but the stupid company decided that they want to change the working hours of the thomson branch to 4p.m-8p.m for fri and sat, which i couldn't make it cuz of class. so the agency relocated me to centrepoint 7-11. (DAMN!)
well, you'd think that everyone in every branch will be promoting the same way, but no.... the centrepoint and orchard plaza one gets their own table. wtf! ok first thought, you'd think centrepoint and orchard plaza would get the best sales, but no way if you actually gave it serious thoughts, and here's why:
1) centrepoint 7-11 has 2 entrances. given a table at one entrance, i have to be selling to the customers walking in, as well as pple going in and out of centrepoint. so obviously i miss the other pple walking in from the other entrance -_-
2) given a table, i HAVE to stand at the table and not move around, cuz the displays(free gifts from buying beer) might get stolen if i wasn't watching. wouldn't it be better if i was like every other promoter at the other outlets, NOT given a table, so i can walk around the store to promote?
3) because i can't walk around, on the 2nd day of my job, i had to resort to: lelong. any passer-bys who made eye contact with me, or showed signs of interest in my displays from afar, i had to raise my voice, and semi-shout the promotion we were having. the promoter on my left also had a table, and was also shouting. now imagine, wat's the difference between 7-11 and pasar malam? none.
4) pple go town and centrepoint to do some shopping. who in the right mind would leave their house and go all the way down to centrepoint 7-11 just to get packs of beer?
5) most pple take public transport to town. i would assume that most of the pple walking ard are not drivers. like my boonie, most drivers wouldn't even think of going town on a busy weekend. so tell me, which person in the right mind would purchase packs of tiger beer, and lug them home on the train or bus? even I would buy groceries and heavy stuff from my neighbourhood supermart.
yes, so in total, promoting beer in town SUCKS!
if there's 3 good things i can get out of this sucky job, it's 1) earn money. 2) hopefully lose weight by standing so long (4 straight hours). 3) people watching.
i saw many different types of pple walking past in front of me. really interesting, seriously. let me recall wat sorts of pple i found amusing...
- this lady who had the absolute worst fashion sense ever. pink velvet sleeved top. pink velvet short skirt. bright hot pink handbag. pink heels. and mind you, they were all not of some good or high end brand. obviously from This Fashion, or malaysia, or anywhere cheap. i don't know why her boyfriend agreed to go shopping with her. i love and absolutely adore anything pink. but i just wanted to laugh out loud when i saw her.
- the ultimate super bitch ever. u see, i appraoch every customer walking into the store. so this skinny bitch walks in, and i approached her, and she so obviouly turned her head before my eyes and walked straight past me with that cocky come-slap-me face! what the f**k! then later when she left, her bag hit a box along the way and dropped to the floor. and she had the f**king audacity to walk away! she was absolutely the most bitchy f**ker i've ever seen.
- an uncle who just knocked off from cold storage. stood and asked bout the offers. started telling me that he knew suppliers who could give him the same thing for free... that ntuc probably also has this offer... blah blah blah. dear uncle, i never asked you anything bout who you know or what you know. so f**k off if you're not interested. i dun really give a shit. if i could (which i did not cuz i was working and didn't want a complain) i would have told u that i didn't care and can't be bothered. but oh well, being the nice me, i stood and smiled and attempted to make conversation and told him to come back if he was still interested. sigh...
- japanese pple whom, when i approached, stopped to listen to what i have to say. not knowing that they were japanese, i just promoted as usual. it was only when i asked if they were interested, they were still nodding their heads. obviously they had no idea what i was saying. but one guy was nice enough to buy a pack from me, (though he had no idea what i was saying) cuz he was sweating so profusely, i tink he needed beer badly. thank you jap guy!
- this guy who came up to me, started telling me he works for JAL and asked if i was interested in being an air stewardess for them. then he handed me his name card, said to call him if i was interested in the recruitment this august. hahaha! gosh. this offer is so not the right time! dearie, i'm still studying. but it would have been so nice if i could accept it! BUT, must learn the japanese language. well, let's just see what happens when i graduate in another 2 years time la...
ok i can't rmb much now. i'll just post a picture of what struck me the most on my second day of work: the cockcroach that stayed stationary for the 1st two hours on the sliding door just next to me. after the first two hours, it started crawling upwards until it left my sight. i tell u, it was probably less than a metre away from me, and i swear i would scream if it flew near me. here's the little scary thing: (ok it was really little, like a baby cockcroach. but still!)
